Wrestling at Gymnasia

Wrestling runs in Georgia's blood. From the ancient tradition of Chidaoba to Olympic medals on the world stage, Georgians have been among the finest wrestlers on earth for centuries. At Gymnasia in Tbilisi, our wrestling program honors this heritage while building the takedown skills, mat control, and physical toughness that make wrestling the most dominant base in all of combat sports. Whether you want to compete, sharpen your MMA game, or tap into one of your country's greatest sporting traditions, this is where you belong.

Why Wrestling at Gymnasia?

  • Georgia's Proudest Martial Tradition: Georgian wrestling (Chidaoba) is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. When you train wrestling at Gymnasia, you are continuing a tradition that stretches back centuries — in a country that produces Olympic and World Championship medalists in the sport.
  • The Ultimate Combat Sports Base: Wrestling is the single most important skill in MMA and the foundation of all grappling arts. Takedown ability dictates where the fight takes place. At Gymnasia, you develop the takedown skills that give you the advantage in any martial art.
  • Unmatched Physical Conditioning: Wrestling builds explosive power, grip strength, core stability, and mental toughness like no other sport. A wrestler's conditioning is legendary — and training at Gymnasia will transform your body.
  • Functional Self-Defense: The ability to take someone down and control them on the ground is the most practical self-defense skill there is. Wrestling teaches you to dictate the terms of a confrontation without throwing a single punch.
  • Cross-Training Synergy: Wrestling integrates perfectly with every other discipline at Gymnasia. Wrestlers dominate in MMA, improve rapidly in BJJ, and have an edge in judo competition. Adding wrestling to your training is the highest-leverage skill investment you can make.

What to Expect in Your First Class

A wrestling class at Gymnasia runs 60 to 90 minutes. The session begins with an intensive warm-up — jogging, sprawl drills, shot drills, tumbling, and partner-based movement. Wrestling warm-ups are workouts in themselves. The instructor then teaches the technique of the day: this could be a single-leg or double-leg takedown, a front headlock series, a body lock throw, or a mat return from referee's position. You drill with a partner at increasing intensity, then engage in situational sparring (starting from specific positions). Advanced wrestlers do live rounds. The session ends with conditioning and stretching. Wear athletic shorts and a tight-fitting shirt (rash guard is ideal). Wrestling shoes are optional but helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wrestling suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. While wrestling has a reputation for being physically demanding, our classes are structured to bring beginners along at a manageable pace. You start with basic stance, movement, and simple takedowns. Live wrestling is introduced gradually as your technique and conditioning improve. Many of our members started wrestling as adults with no prior experience.

What should I wear to class?

Athletic shorts (no pockets or zippers) and a tight-fitting shirt or rash guard. Wrestling shoes are helpful for grip and ankle support but not mandatory — many grapplers train barefoot. Avoid loose clothing that can catch fingers and toes.

How often should I train wrestling?

For beginners, 2 to 3 sessions per week builds technique and conditioning effectively. Serious wrestlers train 4 to 5 times per week. If you are cross-training for MMA, even one wrestling session per week will dramatically improve your overall game.

Do I need my own equipment?

Just athletic clothing for your trial class. Wrestling shoes are the main optional equipment — they provide better grip and ankle support. No headgear or singlet is required for training. Mouthguards are recommended for live sparring.

Is wrestling safe? What about injuries?

Wrestling is physically demanding but training at Gymnasia is conducted safely. Takedowns are practiced at controlled intensity, and beginners are never thrown into live wrestling before they are ready. Coaches supervise all sessions and pair you with appropriate training partners. Proper warm-ups and drilling significantly reduce injury risk.

Can I compete?

Yes. Georgia has an incredibly rich wrestling competition scene, from local tournaments to national championships that serve as pipelines to international competition. If you want to compete, our coaching team will prepare you.

What age groups can train?

Our adult wrestling program is open to anyone 16 and older. Wrestling is also one of the best martial arts for children — ask about our kids programs.

How is wrestling different from BJJ or judo?

Wrestling focuses on takedowns and top control — getting your opponent to the ground and keeping them there. Unlike BJJ, traditional wrestling does not use submissions (though the skills transfer directly). Unlike judo, wrestling emphasizes leg attacks (single-leg, double-leg) and ground-based rides and turns. Wrestling's pace is faster and more physically intense than most grappling arts, building unmatched conditioning and toughness.

Ready to Step on the Mat?

Wrestling is the oldest and most fundamental combat sport — and in Georgia, it is part of who we are. At Gymnasia, you can tap into this tradition with modern coaching in a world-class facility. Your first class is free. Step on the mat and discover why wrestlers are the toughest athletes in any room.
