Kids Screening & Youth Athlete Assessment in Tbilisi — Gymnasia SPRI

Kids Screening at Gymnasia SPRI

Starting a sport is one of the best decisions a family can make for a child's development. But before a young athlete begins training, it is essential to know that their body is ready — that their heart is healthy, their movement patterns are sound, and their physical development is on track.

Gymnasia SPRI's Kids Screening program provides a comprehensive, age-appropriate health and fitness assessment designed specifically for children and adolescents entering sports or already training competitively.

What is Kids Screening?

Kids Screening is a multi-component pediatric assessment that evaluates a child's physical readiness for sport participation. The program was developed to identify potential health risks, establish fitness baselines, and provide parents and coaches with actionable information about a young athlete's development. Components include:

  • Physical Therapy Consultation — Initial assessment by a pediatric-experienced physical therapist to evaluate posture, mobility, and musculoskeletal health
  • Medical History Review — Thorough review of the child's health background, family medical history, and any existing conditions
  • Fitness Evaluation — Age-appropriate tests measuring cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and coordination
  • Functional Movement Screen (FMS) — Standardized assessment of movement quality to identify asymmetries, compensations, and injury risk factors
  • Body Composition Analysis — Healthy baseline measurement appropriate for the child's age and sport
  • ECG Screening — Electrocardiogram to detect congenital heart defects, inherited cardiac conditions, and rhythm abnormalities

Who Should Get Kids Screening?

  • Children Starting a New Sport — Ensure cardiac health and physical readiness before beginning training
  • Young Competitive Athletes — Annual screening for athletes in organized competition, as recommended by sports medicine guidelines
  • Children with Family History of Heart Conditions — Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, and other inherited conditions can be detected early
  • Pre-Academy Assessment — Sports academies and clubs increasingly require health clearance before enrollment
  • Growing Athletes — Monitoring physical development during growth spurts to adjust training loads and prevent overuse injuries
  • Parents Seeking Reassurance — Independent, professional assessment that your child is developing healthily for their age and activity level

What to Expect During Your Visit

  1. Welcome & History (15 min) — Parent/guardian completes a health questionnaire. The child's medical and activity history is reviewed with the family
  2. Physical Therapy Assessment (15 min) — A therapist evaluates posture, joint mobility, muscle balance, and movement quality through age-appropriate tests
  3. Fitness Testing (15-20 min) — Standardized, safe assessments of cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and coordination
  4. ECG Screening (5-10 min) — Completely painless and non-invasive heart recording using adhesive sensors on the chest
  5. Results Discussion (10-15 min) — The specialist reviews all findings with the parent, explains what they mean, and provides recommendations

Total visit: approximately 60-75 minutes.

How We Use the Results

Kids Screening data supports multiple important decisions:

  • Sport Selection Guidance — Help identify which sports best match a child's physical profile and developmental stage
  • Training Load Recommendations — Appropriate volume and intensity guidelines for the child's current development level
  • Injury Prevention — Early identification of movement asymmetries or weaknesses that could lead to injury under training stress
  • Cardiac Clearance — Documentation that the child's heart is healthy for athletic activity
  • Development Tracking — Baseline data that can be compared in future screenings to monitor healthy progression
  • Coach Communication — Written report that parents can share with coaches to inform training decisions

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is appropriate for kids screening?

We recommend screening for children aged 6 and above who are starting or already participating in organized sports. VO2max testing is available from age 10.

Is the ECG safe and painless for children?

Absolutely. ECG is completely non-invasive — small adhesive stickers are placed on the skin, and the test records the heart's electrical activity for a few minutes. No needles, no radiation, no pain.

How long does the full screening take?

Plan for approximately 60-75 minutes for the complete assessment, including all components and results discussion with parents.

Do parents stay during the screening?

Yes. Parents or guardians are welcome to stay throughout the entire assessment.

How often should screening be repeated?

We recommend annual screening for children actively training in sports. More frequent assessments may be advisable during rapid growth phases or if any concerns are identified.

What if something concerning is found?

If any finding requires further attention, our specialist will explain the situation clearly and recommend appropriate next steps, which may include referral to a pediatric cardiologist or orthopedic specialist.

Does my child need a doctor's referral?

No referral is needed. Parents can book directly.

Is this available for non-Gymnasia members?

Yes. SPRI services are open to all children, regardless of Gymnasia membership.
